The Shaykh’s follow-up to clarify the doubts of some of those who declare people disbelievers.

The Shaykh : But when one declares disbelief with his tongue, the matter is settled. So what is the evidence now, if we want to say that practical disbelief not accompanied by doctrinal disbelief is a disbelief that keeps its owner in the Fire? What is the evidence from the Book of Allah or from the hadith of the Messenger of Allah? We know that the argument is only valid with knowledge of the Shari'ah ruling. So if he did not know for one reason or another—and this is a matter we have referred to before—what is the evidence that one who falls into any of the things that make one a disbeliever, whether by speech out of ignorance or heedlessness, as we mentioned in the story of the one who made that bequest, or by his action, is a disbeliever whose disbelief keeps him in the Fire? We have no evidence. Are we to say so-and-so said this and so-and-so said that? These statements are contradictory. And Allah the Exalted says: [An-Nisa 4:59] to the end of the verse.
The questioner : All right, suppose.
The Shaykh : Do you remember any evidence?
The questioner : So,[An-Nahl 16:106]. As the scholars said, Allah the Exalted did not make an exception for anyone but the one who was coerced. As for the one who was not coerced, regardless of whether he considered it permissible or not, merely by uttering disbelief, he is a disbeliever.
The Shaykh : This verse is an argument against you. Do you know why?
The questioner : Why?
The Shaykh : He expanded his chest, he expanded his chest. May Allah reward you. This is an argument against you. Reflect on it deeply.
Abu Malik: Because he does not understand the state of expansion.
The questioner : It is like accepting disbelief.
Abu Malik: It is not accepting disbelief.
The Shaykh : No, no.
Abu Malik: Never.
The Shaykh : He knows the disbelief and is at peace with it.
Abu Malik: Allahu Akbar.
The Shaykh : This is the meaning of the verse.
The questioner : But what we read contradicts this interpretation, and what we know.
The Shaykh : So you must renew the way you understand the texts.
The questioner : That everyone who speaks of disbelief.
The Shaykh : You must renew the way you understand the texts. Did you read this point in the verse? The one whose chest was expanded...
And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day
The questioner : All right, suppose.
The Shaykh : Do you remember any evidence?
The questioner : So,
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief
The Shaykh : This verse is an argument against you. Do you know why?
