The questioner : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Your Eminence,The Shaykh : In the previous session, dated the twenty-first of Ramadan in the year 1416, we concluded by stating that faith is speech and action, that it increases and decreases, and that its people differ in degree therein. Second, that one who knows with his heart and testifies with his tongue is not thereby a believer until he performs the actions of the heart, such as reverence, love, hatred, loyalty, and enmity. Third, that disbelief is of six types: denial, rejection, stubbornness, turning away, hypocrisy, and doubt. Fourth, that disbelief does not occur by belief alone, but by belief, speech, and action. Fifth, that the Murji'ah are those who confined disbelief to denial by the heart.

The Shaykh : Excuse me, and that disbelief does not occur

The questioner : Fourth, that disbelief does not occur by belief alone, but by belief, speech, and action.

The Shaykh : Did I just say "alone"?

The questioner : Yes, I said "alone."

The Shaykh : But by belief, speech, and action.

The questioner : But by belief.

The Shaykh : But by belief as well.

The questioner : But by belief, speech, and action.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Fifth, that the Murji'ah are those who confined disbelief to denial by the heart, and they held that anyone whom the Lawgiver declares a disbeliever is declared so only because the affirmation of the heart regarding Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, is absent. Then there was a verbal disagreement, which I think can be summarized as follows: they say that a man may be a disbeliever while affirming the truth, whereas you say that he is not called an affirmer but a knower; that is, a man may be a disbeliever while knowing, like Iblis, the cursed one.
