The questioner : This questioner from Yemen says in this question: The honorable Shaykh, what is the difference between Islam, faith, and excellence in worship? And if a person establishes Islam but leaves the rest, do we declare him a disbeliever or not?
The Shaykh : The difference between these three was explained by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Jibril asked him about Islam, faith, and excellence in worship. He said to himSahih Muslim 8a Then he asked him about faith, and he said Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2610Sahih (Darussalam) And he asked him about excellence in worship, and he said Sahih al-Bukhari 50 This is the difference. And whoever leaves one of them, there is a detail in that. Whoever leaves the two testimonies, not testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, is a disbeliever and an apostate by the consensus of the Muslims. And whoever brings the two testimonies but leaves the prayer, he is a disbeliever according to the stronger position, and the evidence for that is abundant and passes by us often in this program. And whoever leaves zakah, or fasting, or Hajj, he is not declared a disbeliever according to the stronger position, due to the statement of Abdullah ibn Shuqayq "The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not consider any of the acts of worship, if left, to be disbelief except the prayer".
As for faith, its pillars are six. If one denies one of them, he is a disbeliever. If he does not believe in Allah, he is a disbeliever; or in His angels, he is a disbeliever; or in His books, he is a disbeliever; or in His messengers, he is a disbeliever; or in the Last Day, he is a disbeliever; or in divine decree, he is a disbeliever.
As for excellence in worship, it is perfection. If a person brings it, there is no doubt that he is more perfect, meaning he prays as if he sees his Lord. If he does not see Him, then Allah the Exalted sees him. So excellence in worship is perfection and grace, and faith: leaving one of its pillars is disbelief, and Islam has a detail in it. Yes.
