What are the etiquettes of gatherings of knowledge?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. As for what follows, this is one of the tapes from the Hidayah wa al-Nur series of scholarly lessons and legal rulings by our Shaykh, Muhammad Nasir al-DinThe Shaykh : (may Allah preserve him) We ask Allah to benefit everyone with it, and now with the first tape after two hundred and one.
Verily, praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and from the bad of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will rectify for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has attained a great success.; As for what follows:
The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire; and further:
As for speaking about ordinary gatherings, it is crowding and not spreading out. And the opposite is the case if you are told to spread out in these gatherings, then make room. But in the lesson, it is obligatory to gather closely. This is a point that we should know and give it full attention. We used to see in many mosques that the scholarly circle, despite the small number of its members, would expand and expand according to the statusThe Shaykh : , so the greater the statusThe Shaykh : in the hearts of those gathered around him, the larger and wider the circle would become, and the opposite is exactly the opposite. If they knew among the benefits of the Sunnah and its ripe, clear fruits, that the Muslim’s life with all people, and especially those among them who are students of knowledge, is rectified by these hadiths which I and others were heedless of, or of them, and we did not pay attention to them until Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) guided us to them. The hadith of Abu Thalhah al-Hushni (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "When we traveled with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we stopped at one of those stopping places in the valleys and gorges, we would disperse in them." And if dispersing in gatherings of knowledge is a real fact, but it is once, then it is even more so that they should disperse in the desert when they stop at some of the places. Nevertheless, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was not pleased with that for them, so he said to them one day—May Allah reward you, O professor and dear one, without standing up, how are you? I hope you are better, if Allah wills, we wish you complete health.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh: When they stopped once on a journey of their journeys with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and dispersed as was their custom, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them:
Your dispersing in these valleys and gorges is from the work of Satan. إنما تفرقكم في هذه الوديان والشعاب من عمل الشيطان
A strange matter, dispersing does not observe a distance between hearts; because the Companions of the Messenger (peace be upon him) were truly brothers on beds facing each other. Nevertheless, our Prophet (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) says to them:
Your scattering is only from the work of Satan. إنما تفرقكم هذا من عمل الشيطان
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 65:348
meaning by that that it is from the work of Satan, which may lead the beloved, loving, and affectionate to hatred and aversion. And for that reason, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) described that drinking intoxicants is from the work of Satan; because it casts enmity and hatred between people. Abu Thalhah al-Khushni (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "And after that, when we stopped at a place, we would gather until if we sat on a carpet, it would suffice us. In the desert, if we gathered on a carpet, it would suffice us." If this is the case in that gathering, then it is even more so that people should be gathered in gatherings of knowledge, and that they should not be scattered, distant, and dispersed.
