The questioner : This questioner, N. A. J. from the Sultanate of Oman, asks: If the prayer is broadcast live on the radio or television, is it permissible for a woman to pray the Tahajjud prayer with the radio or television in the blessed month of Ramadan, as well as the Friday prayer, given that there is a time difference of approximately one hour, and she intends to follow Makkah al-Mukarramah?
The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a person to follow an imam via television or via radio. This is because one of the conditions for following is that the person must be in the same place as the imam; he must attend the mosque where the imam is, unless the mosque is full and the rows are connected, in which case the prayer is valid even if one is outside the mosque.
It is well known that one who watches the television from al-Masjid al-Haram or al-Masjid al-Nabawi while being in other locations does not meet this condition. Therefore, it is not valid to follow an imam whose prayer is transmitted via television or via telephone, whether the praying person is a woman, a sick man, or a healthy man. Rather, it is said: whoever is able to attend the place should attend, and whoever is not able should not follow an imam who is far from him.
