If the prayer of a worshipper is invalidated, does he repeat the prayer or build upon what preceded?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in his *Bulugh* a hadith, which is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
If one of you breaks wind during his prayer, let him perform wudu and repeat his prayer. إذا فسى أحدكم في صلاته فليتوضأ وليعيد صلاته
He said it was narrated by the four and authenticated by Ibn Hibban; and you stated in *al-Mishkat* that this hadith contains a man whose name is, as I recall, Isa ibn Jabbar, about whom Ibn Abd al-Barr said: "He is one who is not relied upon as evidence," and Ibn Hajar also said this in *al-Taqrib*; then you said, "For this reason, did you include it in *Da'if al-Sunan*?" And if it is known that this hadith is weak, is it possible to say that if one breaks his prayer, he must perform wudu and then build upon what he left of his prayer, based on the hadith narrated by Ibn Majah in his *Sunan*, which is a sound hadith, and for which he established a chapter titled: "The Chapter on What Came Regarding Building Upon the Prayer"? That is the hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with the Companions, then gestured to them to remain, then went and performed ghusl, then returned and prayed with them, and then said to them after completing his prayer:
I came out to you in a state of sexual impurity, and I forgot until I had started to pray. إني خرجت إليكم جنبا وإني نسيت حتى قمت في الصلاة
Sunan Ibn Majah 1220Hasan (Darussalam)
; so how can one reconcile between these two hadiths?

The Shaykh : Which of the two hadiths?

The questioner : The first hadith:
If one of you breaks wind during his prayer... إذا فسى أحدكم في صلاته ...

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you; since you have known that it is a weak hadith, how do you seek to reconcile it with the sound hadith?

The questioner : I mean, Ibn Hibban authenticates it.

The Shaykh : No, now you, and do not hold me accountable if I tell you that either your question is fiqhi or your question is hadithi, and mixing between the two is sufficient to be a mix; if you asked how to reconcile, the answer comes to you that fiqh does not allow reconciling a sound hadith with a weak hadith; and if you asked how it was weakened when Ibn Hibban authenticated it, this is a hadithi question we can discuss if you wish; but I do not believe that is your question.

The questioner : My question is fiqhi: if it is known that the hadith is weak, does it mean that if one breaks his prayer, he must perform wudu and build upon what he left of his prayer, in adherence to what Ibn Majah narrated?

The Shaykh : Have you moved away from your previous question about how to reconcile?

The questioner : Yes, I have left the reconciliation.

The Shaykh : Then let us rest; now, what is your question?

The questioner : If it is known that the hadith which Ibn Hajar said was narrated by the four in the *Sahih* collections, except for Ibn Hibban, is weak; is it possible to say that the one who breaks his prayer...?

The Shaykh : No, it is not so, and what you mentioned from the *Sunan* of Ibn Majah is the proof; is the answer clear?

The questioner : Yes, O Shaykh; well, is turning one's back to the qiblah considered in that...?

The Shaykh : This is another issue; if he is able not to do it, and it appears in most cases that he is not able not to do it; yes.
