If one doubts whether his ablution has been invalidated, what should he do?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The Shaykh, may Allah reward you: Regarding a person who goes to pray and doubts in himself whether his ablution has been invalidated or not, what should he do?

The Shaykh : If a person is in a state of ablution and doubts whether his ablution has been invalidated or not, he remains in his state of ablution. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this and said:
He should not return (from prayer) unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell (of passing wind). لا ينصرف حتى يسمع صوتاً أو يجد ريحاً
Sahih Muslim 361
And praise be to Allah, this is a relief for the person. Even if your suspicion becomes strong that you have broken your ablution, do not pay attention to it unless you are certain.
But suppose you were in a state of ritual impurity and you doubted whether you had performed ablution or not. Is ablution obligatory for you or not? The question is for you?

The questioner : Yes, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : That is, a person broke his ablution, and then when the call to prayer was made and he wanted to go to the mosque, he doubted whether he had performed ablution after breaking it or not?

The questioner : He performs wudu.

The Shaykh : He must perform ablution, because the original state is the continuation of ritual impurity until one is certain of its removal.
