What is the ruling on workers' tips?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : It is well known that some workers work in private establishments, and you find that customers offer tips of their own accord. This is one situation. The second situation is that sometimes the worker himself asks for this tip. What is the ruling of the religion in this matter? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : As for asking for a tip, this is a humiliation, and it is not permissible for a Muslim to expose himself to it, because the Messenger (peace be upon him) used to say:
The upper hand is the giver, and the lower hand is the taker. اليد العليا هي المعطية واليد السفلى هي الآخذة
and he used to say:
Do not ask people for anything, even if I were given a whip. لا تسألوا الناس شيئا ولو أعطني السوط
Do you understand the meaning of this hadith? Good. And how can he be a beggar asking for money that he does not deserve and that is not his right? As for if the customer gives it to him from his own inclination, then the following detail is necessary: if what he is given is because he performed the work his employer asked of him, and not because he performed work his employer is unaware of, and he pays it to him willingly and from his own pocket, then it is permissible. But if this worker did this work for this customer without his employer knowing about it, then the money he takes is illicit for him. Is that clear? May Allah reward you with good.

The questioner : Clear. May Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : We have drunk from your abundance.
