A Pause with the Hadith: "Leave the People in Their Ignorance"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said to me, "O Shaykh, let the people be." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Leave the people in their ignorance
Allah is the Greatest.
Based on the knowledge I had at that time, and where is the verse we mentioned, for example,
And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong
[Ali 'Imran 3:104]
? What is the meaning of enjoining good and forbidding evil if you say the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Leave the people in their ignorance
? But it had never reached my hearing before that there was such a hadith in the world.
We stayed awake as long as we did, and I could not sleep that night until I searched for the hadith, and lo!The Shaykh : Isma'il al-'Ajlouni, a man from your town here, 'Ajloun, has a book titled "Kashf al-Khafa wa Muzid al-Bas 'an al-Ahadith al-Mashhurah bayn al-Nas" (Unveiling the Obscure and Adding to the Clarity Regarding the Hadiths Popular Among People). There he cites this hadith
Leave the people in their ignorance, in...
under the letter D, saying, "I think, quoting from al-Sakhawi in al-Maqasid al-Hasanah: This addition has no basis, and the original of the hadith is as in Sahih Muslim:
leave the people alone, Allah will give them provision from one another.
Sahih Muslim 1522a
." Where is the hadith, and where does it shift? It shifts from the hadith that has no basis, which was about buying and selling and forbidding facing... what is this called in the hadith? "The one who starts" (al-badi'), the one who initiates.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, that was its subject, and then it shifts due to the addition that has no basis, to the opposite of the entire Shari'ah, which commands us to enjoin good and forbid evil and not to be silent about... and those grazing in it
Like a group of people who boarded a ship, with a group in its upper part and a group in its lower part
, to the end of the hadith. Then those in the lower part said, "What if we dig a hole in the bottom of the ship and draw water from it?" He (peace be upon him) said:
If they leave them alone, then if they take hold of their hands, they will be saved and they will save them; but if they leave them to their own devices, they will perish and they will cause them to perish
. How does this reconcile with that? What is the ruling regarding the authentic reports? The Shaykh : That the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Leave the people in their ignorance
I say, with great regret, that most of the shaykhs today act according to this hadith that has no basis: "Leave the people, my brother, it is enough for them that they pray and fast, and so on."
No, this is contrary to Islam.
And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good
[Ali 'Imran 3:104]
This is an obligatory aspect, a second obligation.
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best
[An-Nahl 16:125]
So it is not permissible for one obligation to override the other. We are not among those who say that in the name of politics and leniency we leave off enjoining good and forbidding evil, nor are we among those who, in the name of the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil, use harshness, for harshness does not bring good.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: And you as well, if Allah wills.

Another questioner : That is enough, my brothers.
