If you enter the mosque and the imam is bowing, do you bow before joining the row?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : If you enter the mosque and the imam is bowing, do you bow before joining the row, or must you reach the row first and then bow?

The Shaykh : You bow where you are to catch the rak'ah, then you creep along while bowing until you join the row. Did you get the answer to your question?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : ... bow?

The Shaykh : He bows where he is.

The questioner : Where he is ... ?

The Shaykh : He walks with a creeping gait while bowing until he joins the row.

The questioner : The authentic hadith is:
And do not do it again ولا تعد
.

The Shaykh : This is what he did. What you read is not this, and this has happened to you twice, Abu Muhammad. What you read is not what you are saying, and what you just read is not the hadith we are discussing. That one is about running to catch up with the imam in bowing.

The questioner : He bowed ... .

The Shaykh : No, stay with me. It is not just that you tell me to stay with you; I am also learning from you. (laughs)The Shaykh : (may Allah have mercy on him) — Glory be to Allah, why is it not permissible for me to learn?

The questioner : So a person remains a learner and a scholar.

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you. That is why I learn from you. That hadith is the hadith of Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi in Sahih al-Bukhari, that the Messenger (peace be upon him) was bowing. When he heard a thud after the salam, he said:
Who is the one who rushed? أيكم المسرع ؟
He said: It is me, O Messenger of Allah. He said: I feared I would miss the rak'ah. He said:
May Allah increase your eagerness! But do not do it again. زادك الله حرصًا ، ولا تعد
Sunan Abi Dawud 683Sahih (Al-Albani)
So this hadith is different from this question. The hadith is that he ran, and we say do not run. Whoever wants to catch the rak'ah, do not run. Look at how the hadiths respond to one another. So instead of running, Abu Muhammad, to catch the rak'ah, you fall into contradicting this specific hadith, and the general hadith, which is his saying (peace be upon him):
When you come to the prayer, come to it with calmness and composure, and do not come to it while rushing. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you catch and what you missed, complete it. إذا أتيتم الصلاة فأتوها وعليكم السكينة والوقار ، ولا تأتوها وأنتم تسعون , فما أدركتم فصلوا وما أدركتم وما فاتكم فأتموا
After that, the Messenger (peace be upon him) came with a solution, a means to address the greed of those who rush and run to catch the rak'ah. He said:
Bow where you are and do not run, then creep along while bowing until you join the congregation. اركع حيث أنت ولا تركض ثم دب دبيبًا وأنت راكع حتى تنضم إلى الجماعة
This is a great hadith, truly.

The questioner : A great hadith.

The Shaykh : A great hadith. May Allah reward you with good.
