Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) exercise independent legal reasoning in the rulings of the Shari'ah?

The Shaykh : The question arises here: Does the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) have actions in the Shari'ah, in the rulings of the Shari'ah, where he might be correct or mistaken because he exercised independent legal reasoning, and where he was not revealed anything regarding those efforts? Did this occur, or is everything that came from the words of the Messenger (peace be upon him) concerning the rulings of the Shari'ah entirely revelation? I say, in answering this question, and I raise it only to draw attention to the point of the answer first.
