Explanation of the Hadith (And My Ummah Will Split Into...)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We are more aware of the impossibility of this than you are. Why? Because we have a hadith from the Messenger:
The Jews split into seventy-one sects and the Christians into seventy-two, and my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all in the Fire except one. تفرقت اليهود على إحدى وسبعين فرقة والنصارى على اثنتين وستفترق أمتي على ثلاث وسبعين فرقة كلها في النار إلا واحدة
It is the Muslim Ummah. Are we still asking for tawhid (the oneness of Allah)? Are we asking for the impossible? Now, you must bring up a question for us, and if the question does not occur to you, I will teach it to you. So, if we agree that this is impossible, how do we proceed?

The questioner : That it is the saved sect.

The Shaykh : It is coming to you now. How do we proceed? Since it is impossible for the Muslims to agree on one madhhab (school of jurisprudence), and we are callers to this, and it is impossible, and we have brought you the hadith that no one in the assembly has not digested and heard repeatedly and repeatedly. The saved sect. Now, I asked a question and I repeat it: if it is not possible for the Muslim Ummah to agree on one madhhab, what is the course of action? Do you have an answer to this question?

The questioner : I have an answer.

The Shaykh : Please go ahead.

The questioner : That we know who the saved sect is and we become part of it?

The Shaykh : Good. What is the way to know the saved sect?

The questioner : Following the hadith and the Sunnah. They are the people of the hadith and the Sunnah.

The Shaykh : You did very well. I see you are about to surpass us in Salafism. (Laughter)The Shaykh : (may Allah have mercy on him) and the students with him. Following the hadith and the Sunnah. I want to return with you to the reality of the Muslims. Do they follow the hadith and the Sunnah so that they may be from the saved sect...?

The questioner : All the Muslims?

The Shaykh : No, we have explained to you that the Muslims are three categories.

The questioner : You mean the third category?

The Shaykh : Scholars, students of knowledge, and the general Muslim public. And peace be upon you.

The questioner : One category follows and one category does not follow.

The Shaykh : Which is the majority?

The questioner : The majority do not follow.

The Shaykh : They do not follow. So, does the majority now agree with the minority or oppose it?

The questioner : The majority?

The Shaykh : Yes, does the majority agree with the minority or oppose it?

The questioner : Excuse me, meaning that not following the minority does not mean that one opposes it. It is possible for one to agree with it in opinion but oppose it in practice.

The Shaykh : You are talking now about necessities, what is obligatory and what is not; I am asking you: does what is in your mind agree with it or oppose it? One of the two?

The questioner : No, it opposes it.

The Shaykh : Well, there is no power nor strength except in Allah. When it opposes it, does it fight it or befriend it?

The questioner : Whoever opposes something wants to fight it.

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you. Stay with this point. So, we call people not to fight the call to the truth. What is the call to the truth? You mentioned it, not I. So, you are now given a warning that you are a candidate to be called a "Fifth," meaning a fifth madhhab, or a candidate to be called a Wahhabi. So, be careful, be careful.
Al-Halabi : Our Shaykh, to complete something related to the research.

The Shaykh : Yes, please.
Al-Halabi : That is, Dr. al-Bouti mentioned in his book *Al-Lamadhahiyah* (Non-Sectarianism) that he reminds us of his other book, which is *Al-Salafiyah* (Salafism).

The Shaykh: May Allah bless you.
Al-Halabi : He made one of the titles or chapters of his book titled "Adhering to Salafism is an Innovation"; with this title, he demolished his first book.

The Shaykh: Allah is the Greatest!
Al-Halabi : So, our Shaykh, if you could give a brief summary of the book *Al-Salafiyah* and the things he mentioned in his book?

The Shaykh : By Allah, I do not remember the details now, especially the second book, which I have not read at all. But the titles are sufficient. I asked you, my brother, just now if you have an idea about the Salafi call. The truth, Professor, is that the Salafi call, in its essence, is the call of Muslims to return to what the Salaf al-Salih (the Pious Predecessors) were upon, in terms of striving to adhere to the Book and the Sunnah in understanding and practice.
