Is it obligatory for a woman to let her jilbab hang down by the width of a hand?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

The questioner : How are you?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah, may I ask you a question?

The Shaykh: Please go ahead

The questioner : Regarding the length of a woman's jilbab, the condition is that it should hang down, with the hem being the length of an arm or a hand's width.

The Shaykh: That is, this condition applies if the woman's clothing is as it was before, meaning the women used to wear only the shirt, i.e., the dishdasha.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh: Meaning there are no trousers, no leggings, or anything else that covers the woman's legs and feet, except for this long shirt that is dragged on the ground, which is usually the abaya. So, if the woman, as is the case today, wears stockings and perhaps long trousers, and even if this is rare, it is sufficient for the jilbab to cover the front of the feet.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh: It is not necessary for it to be dragged on the ground, except in the case where the woman does not have clothing such as trousers or stockings or the like.

The questioner : Praise be to Allah.

The Shaykh: Because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) only ordered lengthening out of fear that something of the woman's 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) might be exposed from her foot or her leg. So, if this is covered by clothing or a stocking, and on top of that comes the long jilbab, then in this situation it is not necessary for her to drag her hem on the ground.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you

The questioner : I understand from your words that there is no harm if the shoe appears or a little of the stocking is visible.

The Shaykh: As for the stocking, I told you that the jilbab must cover the front of the feet.

The questioner : Yes, while walking...

The Shaykh: And then you mentioned the shoe; the shoe must not be adorned.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: Because today, most women's shoes are adorned.

The questioner : If Allah wills, we wear something that is not adorned.

The Shaykh: I am not speaking specifically about you, and I do not know who you are; I am speaking in general terms to all women.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you
