The questioner : Among the matters that are difficult for a Muslim to understand are the jurisprudential issues related to travel, as some see a difference between travel in these days and the days in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lived. Some believe that there is no hardship in traveling if it is with the intention of visiting relatives or kin in a city where the same things are available as in the city where the traveler resides. Also, the means of transportation in current days are comfortable, involving no fatigue or toil. Therefore, we would like to know: Does a traveler traveling for a visit, tourism, study, or the like shorten his travel period even if it is long, or is he required to pray the full prayer? We ask for clarification, may you be rewarded?

The Shaykh : We say that the dispensations established for travel came in a general manner without the condition of hardship. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt
[An-Nisa 4:101]
And this condition, namely His saying:
[especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you إنْ خِفْتُمْ أَنْ يَفْتِنَكُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
[An-Nisa 4:101]
, it is established that this condition was abrogated, and Allah bestowed a favor upon His servants by permitting them to shorten the prayer absolutely. The last journey the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made was his journey for the Farewell Pilgrimage, and it is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to shorten the prayer while he was safe.
Based on this, this dispensation, which was revealed in a general manner without a condition, remains valid whether hardship is present or not, as long as the reality of travel exists. So whenever a person is a traveler, it is permissible for him to avail himself of all the dispensations of travel, such as breaking the fast in Ramadan, shortening the four-unit prayer, and wiping over leather socks and socks for three days and nights, even if the person is traveling to visit his relatives, in-laws, or friends and remains in the country where they are. He shortens the prayer as long as he is in that country. However, if the person is a man, it is obligatory for him to attend the congregational prayer in the mosques. If it is decreed that he misses it, or if there is no mosque nearby, he prays two units. As for women, they pray two units because they are not among those who attend the congregation.
