He spoke about some of the violations that occur in mosques.

The Shaykh : The point is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has bestowed a favor upon the people of this locality with this mosque. I say that it is as close as possible to the Sunnah, and I do not say, regretfully, that it is upon the Sunnah. I see in it some things that should not be, but I say a word of truth that it is the closest to the Sunnah compared to other mosques built in this era, where vast sums of money are spent on their construction and decoration, under the assumption that they are honoring the symbols of Allah. The matter is not so, for honoring the symbols of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is not by building tall, decorated mosques with decorations that distract the worshippers from focusing on the Lord of the Worlds in their prayer. It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
When Umm Salama and Umm Habiba returned from Abyssinia, they mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a church they had seen in Abyssinia and described its beauty and the images in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those are the ones who, when a righteous man died among them, would build a mosque over him and make those images in it. Those are the worst of creation in the sight of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
Those are the Christians; when a righteous man died among them, they would build a mosque over his grave and add sin upon sin by making those images. The images referred to here are the carvings and decorations. Therefore, another hadith came in Sunan Abu Dawud and others, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I was not commanded to build high mosques.
Sunan Abi Dawud 448Sahih (Al-Albani)
Building up mosques means raising their structure beyond the need of the worshippers therein. This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud from the hadith of Ibn Abbas, traced back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as you heard. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I was not commanded to build high mosques.
Sunan Abi Dawud 448Sahih (Al-Albani)
Ibn Abbas, after narrating this hadith from him (peace and blessings be upon him), said:
You* will certainly ornament them as the Jews and Christians did.
Mishkat al-Masabih 718
This statement by Ibn Abbas appears, on the surface of its chain, to be mawquf (stopping at a Companion), and it is from his own words. It can be said, in scientific hadith terminology, that it is mawquf in the ruling of marfu' (traced to the Prophet). Or it can be said, and this is necessary if the first is not said, that he understood it from the totality of the hadiths reported in this regard. From that is the hadith of Aisha when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke and said:
When a pious person amongst them (the Jews and Christians) died they used to build a place of worship and prostration on his grave
Bulugh al-Maram 2:125
Ibn Abbas could have taken this statement from such a hadith, and from the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) established in Sahih al-Bukhari from the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3456
So his saying (peace be upon him):
You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors
Sahih al-Bukhari 3456
This meaning includes everything that happens today that involves imitating the Jews and Christians. Thus, the decoration of mosques has occurred today in many mosques, and that was a news item foretold by the Messenger (peace be upon him) previously, and his prophecy was fulfilled, as our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) said in the Qur'an regarding him:
(3) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (4) It is not but a revelation revealed,
[An-Najm 53:3-4]
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, as you see in this era:
The Last Hour will not come until people vie with one another about mosques.
Sunan Abi Dawud 449Sahih (Al-Albani)
The Last Hour will not come until people vie with one another about mosques.
Sunan Abi Dawud 449Sahih (Al-Albani)
Now you see mosques where those in charge of their building boast about the engineering of their structure and the way they print various shapes and colors of decorations on them. This distracts the worshippers from focusing on the Lord of the Worlds (Mighty and Majestic). Therefore, two hadiths came that draw the attention of worshippers to the fact that there should be nothing in their mosque that occupies their minds or distracts them from focusing on Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with their entire being. One of these two hadiths is in Sahih al-Bukhari, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed one day in a shirt called al-Khamisah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said after he prayed:
Take my Khamisah and bring me the Anbijaniyyah of Abu Jahm, for it distracted me—or in another narration—it almost distracted me from my prayer.
What was it that almost distracted him from his prayer? The Khamisah. What is the Khamisah? It is a garment with patterns, having lines of green, blue, white, black, and so on. He said:
Take this decorated cloak of mine and bring me the plain cloak of Abu Jahm.
A simple garment
For this decorated cloak of mine almost distracted me from my prayer.
This is the first hadith that draws our attention to the fact that we should not build our mosques and decorate them with decorations that distract us from focusing on Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in our prayer. The second hadith is that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Mecca as a victor, he entered the Ka'bah and prayed two rak'ahs. He found on the wall he was facing the horns of the ram of Isma'il (peace be upon him) hanging on the wall. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to be covered. Why? Because they distract the mind of the worshipper, even if it is the master of worshippers, our Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him). So what can we say about ourselves? If the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who was focused on Allah with his entire being, feared that some decorations might distract him, then we are certainly more likely, and more likely, and more likely, to be distracted by the decorations around us. Therefore, it is not permissible for the mosques of Muslims to be made to resemble the churches of the Christians and other disbelievers, because these houses must be built simply, without anything that distracts. I return to say that this mosque, compared to other mosques, has been established with a great degree of mindfulness of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). Therefore, I hope that you will address the deficiencies that have not been completed in the construction of the mosque materially.
