The questioner : And this questioner says: If I enter the Sacred Mosque and the 'Isha' prayer has already ended, and I have not prayed it, what is preferable: that I pray 'Isha' alone or with the congregation, given that the tarawih prayer has begun? If we prayed as a congregation, we would disturb the worshippers, or should we join the imam in the tarawih prayer and intend 'Isha'?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is preferable that you join the imam with the intention of 'Isha'. This is the text of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), that if a person comes and the imam is praying tarawih, he joins them with the intention of 'Isha'. It does not harm you that the intention differs between the imam and the follower, because what is prohibited is that the imam and the follower differ in actions, whereas in intention it does not harm. And it is established in the two Sahihs
That Mu'adh ibn Jabal used to pray the 'Isha' prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he would return to his people and pray with them. أن معاذ بن جبل كان يصلي مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلاة العشاء ، ثم يعود إلى قومه فيصلي بهم
so it is a voluntary prayer for him and an obligatory prayer for them. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : No, the reality of this question is that it requires a paper, meaning, okay.

The questioner : No problem.

The Shaykh : Everyone says, "No problem."
But I truly think it was preferable that I point it out.
If one prays tarawih with the imam and the imam says the closing salam, and he has prayed two rak'ahs, then the imam stands to pray the second salam, does this follower join the imam, or do we say he should continue to complete the 'Isha' prayer alone? We say the second: we say he should continue to complete the 'Isha' prayer alone, because if you joined the imam, it would follow that your prayer is more likely to have begun before the imam began his prayer, because you are now in the completion of the prayer, not at its beginning. So it is preferable that you complete it alone. Yes.
