Mentioning the story of the Battle of Hunayn.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Perhaps many of you do not forget what happened to the noblest army on the face of the earth since the creation of Adam until the Day of Resurrection, which is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions in the Battle of...
The students: Hunayn.

The Shaykh : Hunayn, when they relied on their numbers and were proud of them, saying, "We will not be defeated today due to our small numbers." So they were defeated despite their large numbers. They were defeated while they were numerous; their enemy defeated them. They were twelve thousand, and the enemy was three thousand and five hundred men. And yet, defeat occurred. However, victory later became for the Muslims. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
And already had Allah given you victory ولقد نصركم الله
[Ali 'Imran 3:123]
Yes,
[even] on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with its vastness ويوم حنين إذا أعجبتكم كثرتكم فلم تغني عنكم شيئاَ وضاقت عليكم الأرض بما رحبت
[At-Tawbah 9:25]
Yes:
Allah has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you لقد نصركم الله في مواطن كثيرة ويوم حنين إذ أعجبتكم كثرتكم
[At-Tawbah 9:25]
So the end was for the Muslims, praise be to Allah. The important point is that in this disaster, some people came to rely on apparent, tangible causes. But among people are those who relied on Allah and made these causes merely causes that may be beneficial or may not be. And we know that among causes are some that are beneficial and some that are not.
