Explanation of the hadith: "Whoever does not abandon speaking falsehood and acting upon it, and ignorance, then Allah has no need of his abandoning his food and drink."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions and does not abandon foolishness, Allah is not in need of his leaving food and drink من لم يدع قول الزور والعمل به والجهل فليس لله حاجة في أن يدع طعامه وشرابه
Bulugh al-Maram 5:14
Speaking falsehood is every forbidden utterance, such as: bearing false witness against a person with something false, and such as: backbiting, talebearing, cursing, and insulting. Every forbidden utterance falls under speaking falsehood. Acting upon falsehood, or the action of falsehood, is every forbidden deed, such as: a woman's display of her adornment and looking at her, and desecrating what Allah the Exalted has commanded to be respected, and other numerous deeds. Included in this are cheating in measures and weights, deception, and lying. All of this falls under forbidden speech and forbidden action. Ignorance is being arrogant toward people and transgressing against them. Among this is the saying of the poet: "Let no one be ignorant toward us, for we will be ignorant toward them beyond the ignorance of the ignorant" meaning, let no one transgress against us, for if they transgress against us, we will transgress against them more. Now, is fasting good? Please proceed.

The questioner : Fasting is abstaining from food from the dawn.

The Shaykh : The worship of Allah is what it is: abstaining. It must be an act of worship. If we said it is abstaining from things that break the fast from the dawn to the sunset, the definition would be incomplete, because a person may abstain without it being fasting. So we say it is the worship of Allah through abstaining.

The questioner : From the rising of the sun to the setting of the sun.

The Shaykh : Now, this is one type of fasting. The second type is:

The questioner : Physical abstention.

The Shaykh : This physical abstention, or physical fasting.

The questioner : Abstaining from the honor of the Muslims.

The Shaykh : From what Allah has forbidden. Perfect. Now, good.
