The Shaykh : And we have no doubt that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most knowledgeable of creation regarding the legislation of Allah, the most sincere of creation toward the servants of Allah, and the most eloquent of creation in expression, communication, and classification. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not divide innovations into two categories, good and bad, or into five categories, or into anything else that some of the later scholars divided them into. Rather, he stated a general statement: Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam) And what some scholars believe, that there are good innovations, is contrary to the hadith. We say that whoever describes any innovation in the religion of Allah as good is free from one of two things: either it is not an innovation, but he thought it was, or it is an innovation, but he thought it was good when it is not good. As for saying that some innovations are good and some are ugly, this will never be the case, given the statement of the most sincere, most knowledgeable, and most eloquent of creation: "Every innovation is misguidance." This is impossible. So if you see one of the scholars of knowledge dividing innovations into good and ugly, know that what he called good is either not an innovation, or it is not good. That is, if it is established that it is an innovation, it is definitely not good. And if it is established that it is good, it is definitely not an innovation. Based on this, it is obligatory for us to adhere to the Shari'ah in the acts of worship by which we draw near to Allah, in their causes, their types, their methods, their amounts, and their numbers, in everything related to them.
