Is everything the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did considered part of the Sunnah, and is the Muslim rewarded for doing it? I mean the matters specific to him?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is everything the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did considered part of the Sunnah, and is the Muslim rewarded for doing it? I mean the matters specific to him?

The Shaykh : The matters specific to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are specific to him.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : We have no connection to them. Among them is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you [of captives] and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her, [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
Therefore, marriage by gift does not become valid or correct except for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), because Allah said:
[this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
.
Continuous fasting (al-wisal), which is not breaking the fast between two days, is prohibited except for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). For this reason, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited continuous fasting, they said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you practice continuous fasting?" He said:
I am not like you.
Thus, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that the Ummah is not equal to him in this ruling. Whatever is specific to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is specific to him, and its ruling does not extend to the Ummah.
As for what there is no evidence indicating is specific to him, the original ruling is that the Ummah follows the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in what he did, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
This applies to matters of worship. For this reason, He said:
for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
As for ordinary matters, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) doing of them indicates their permissibility, but they are to be followed according to custom, and it is not ruled that they are a Sunnah required in themselves.
There are also things the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did by way of nature and instinct, such as eating, drinking, and sleeping. This has no ruling because he did it (peace and blessings be upon him) by virtue of nature and instinct. However, this type may include prescribed matters, such as sleeping on the right side, eating with the right hand, and drinking with the right hand, and the like.
In summary, the scholars have divided the actions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) into multiple categories. The detailed research on this is found in the principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh). Whoever wishes to refer to it should do so there.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. There are some remaining questions which we will review in a future episode, if Allah wills. Thank you to the listener Hamid Ibrahim, and we return to a message sent by a listener of the program. Here, the listener Huda from Ta'if says: "Your Eminence, the Shaykh."
