I said that the Pen is the one who wrote, so is the Pen an angel from the angels? It is called by this name for the sake of predominance because it writes and because it was created for this purpose.

The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : I said that the Pen is the one who wrote, so is the Pen an angel from the angels? It is called by this name for the sake of predominance because it writes and because it was created for this purpose, or what?

The Shaykh : The Pen is an inanimate object, not an angel. Do not be surprised that an inanimate object is rational and understands what Allah says to it. Do not be surprised that Allah the Exalted addresses it as He addresses those who possess intellect. Have you not seen the saying of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He:
And He completed them as seven heavens within two days
[Fussilat 41:12]
To the saying of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He:
(9) Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds." (10) And He placed on the earth firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information] of those who ask. (11) Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."
[Fussilat 41:9-11]
So they understood the address and responded, saying:
We have come, in obedience.
Do not be surprised. Yes, indeed.
