Commentary on the poet's saying: "No, and no deed is lost with Him *** if it is done with sincerity and excellence. If they are punished, it is by His justice, or if they are blessed, it is by His grace, and praise is for the One who bestows."

The Shaykh : Yes, he said: "No, and no deed is lost with Him ***" meaning that their deeds are also not lost with Him, whereas the deeds of servants for other servants may be lost. Perhaps you strive in a task for a person by helping, assisting, preparing for an absent one, or the like, and your effort is wasted. But with Allah, it will not be wasted. However, the author qualified this by saying: "*** if it is done with sincerity and excellence" Sincerity to Allah and excellence by following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If it is done without these, or if one of them is missing, then it is lost.
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected. مَن عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرُنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b

"If they are punished, it is by His justice, or if they are blessed, *** it is by His grace" And grace belongs to the Most Merciful.
The student: And praise is for the One who bestows.

The Shaykh : And praise is for the Most Merciful. Yes.
The student: For the One who bestows.

The Shaykh : Subhan Allah, I have "for the Most Merciful" in my copy, where the verse is not broken or anything like that. Now,
"If they are punished, it is by His justice, or if they are blessed, *** it is by His grace, and praise is for the One who bestows"
Yes, that is correct. If Allah punishes them, it is by His justice.
And the recompense for an evil is an evil like it.وجزاءُ سيئة سيئةٌ مثلها
Look, He did not say "a sin" only, so that one might not think that the sin is greater than the sin of the doer. Rather, He said "a sin like it," not exceeding it. And whoever does good, yes, he is rewarded with ten times the good deed, up to seven hundred times, up to many times. By the logic of division, there is a third state, which is
The student: Injustice.

The Shaykh : Injustice is impossible; this is impossible for Allah.
And your Lord does injustice to no one. ولا يظلم ربك أحدا
[Al-Kahf 18:49]
Now, the author took these three verses from two verses said by one who came before him, who said: "No right of the servants is obligatory upon Him *** No, and no deed is lost with Him
If they are punished, it is by His justice, or if they are blessed, it is by His grace, and He is the Most Generous, the All-Encompassing.

But the words of Ibn al-Qayyim are better without a doubt, because when Ibn al-Qayyim said: "No right of the servants is obligatory upon Him ***" he qualified it by saying that no right is obligatory upon Him that they have made obligatory. As for a right that is obligatory upon Him that He Himself made obligatory, that is established. Also, he said: "No, and no deed is lost with Him" and the author of the two verses left it general, whereas here he qualified it and said: "*** if it is done with sincerity and excellence" Yes.
