The questioner : If a woman enters the state of ihram for 'Umrah, then her menstrual period begins before the tawaf, and she remains in Makkah, then she becomes pure and wants to take a ritual bath, should she take the bath in Makkah or go to al-Tan'īm to take the bath?

The Shaykh : If a woman enters the state of ihram for 'Umrah and menstruation begins, or if she enters the state of ihram for 'Umrah while already menstruating, and then she becomes pure, she should take a ritual bath in the place where she is staying, in her house, and then go to perform the tawaf and sa'y and complete her 'Umrah. There is no need for her to go out to al-Tan'īm or to the miqat, because she has already entered the state of ihram from the miqat. However, some women, when they pass the miqat while menstruating and intending to perform 'Umrah, do not enter the state of ihram. They enter Makkah, and when they become pure, they go out to al-Tan'īm and enter the state of ihram from there. This is a mistake, because it is obligatory for everyone who passes the miqat intending 'Umrah or Hajj to enter the state of ihram from it, including a menstruating woman. She enters the state of ihram and remains in it until she becomes pure.
This issue is difficult for women because they think that if a woman enters the state of ihram in a garment, she must not change it. This is a mistake, because a woman in the state of ihram does not have a specific dress code like a man. A man does not wear a shirt, a jacket, a turban, trousers, or leather socks. A woman is permitted to wear these; she may wear whatever clothes she wishes. So, if she enters the state of ihram in one garment and changes to another, there is no harm. Therefore, we tell the woman: enter the state of ihram when you pass the miqat and you intend 'Umrah or Hajj. When you become pure, take a ritual bath, then go to perform the tawaf, sa'y, and shortening of the hair. Changing clothes does not harm and has no effect on this matter at all.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
