Is it permissible to slaughter an animal for the deceased? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it permissible to slaughter an animal for the deceased? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : We do not know what he means by slaughtering an animal for the deceased.
If by slaughtering an animal for the deceased he means drawing near to the deceased by slaughtering for him, then this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that takes one out of the religion. Whoever does it must repent to Allah from his shirk. If he does not do so and dies in that state, then Allah says:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
[An-Nisa 4:48]
.
As for if by slaughtering an animal for the deceased he means that he slaughters a sheep to give its meat in charity on behalf of the deceased, then this is permissible. This is because charity on behalf of the deceased, whether in meat, other food, or dirhams, is permissible. So one must look at what the questioner intended: if he intended to slaughter for the deceased to draw near to him and honor him, then this is shirk which Allah does not forgive except through repentance. But if he intended by it that he slaughters a sheep to give its meat in charity, then there is nothing wrong with it.
