How should a Muslim soldier behave if he faces another Muslim soldier in battle?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : As you know, His Eminence,The Shaykh : that many of the young men of this country and other countries have been taken to the army as conscripts. And if, for example, a war breaks out between Bush and Iraq—you know that there are Arab Muslims on the front lines of both sides—if a person from among us is taken, and of course is forced into this matter, what is his obligation on this front if he faces a Muslim brother on that front? What should he do? Does he kill this Muslim if he knows he is a Muslim? And this Muslim may be forced to point his weapon at him, and he does not know if this Muslim is also forced like him or not?

The Shaykh : Any question regarding any issue is, above all, related to knowledge. Therefore, we do not include in the question what is not known. Rather, you know that the one fighting you is a Muslim, and he knows that you are also a Muslim. In this case, the question is valid. But if you are fighting an army that is a mix of disbelievers and Muslims, unfortunately, and you cannot distinguish the Muslim from the disbeliever, then the question is not applicable. Understood? Good.
As for the first scenario, where this Muslim soldier, who is forced to fight, knows that he may face a Muslim brother, we say here: Be a wronged servant of Allah, and do not be a wronging servant of Allah. This is in the case of meeting, not in the case of one army attacking the other. If we assume that a Muslim army attacks a Muslim army in its homeland, we know the answer from the previous hadith
He who died in protecting his property is a martyr. من مات دون ماله فهو شهيد
Sahih Muslim 141a
and so on. As for the scenario we are discussing now, being a wronged servant of Allah is when an army comes from here and an army from there, and they meet in this mix of armies. It is not permissible for a Muslim to intentionally fight his Muslim brother, not in defense of a right, nor in defense of a religion, but rather because this oppressive policy has led him to stand face to face with a Muslim. Here, he tries not to kill a Muslim, and he should be the one killed. We do not mean that he should offer his chest and say, "Kill me," no. Rather, if one of them is to be the one killed, let it be the one who is asking about what is forbidden and what is lawful. And we ask Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to protect us from the evil of trials, both what is apparent and what is hidden. Because in reality, theoretical issues cannot always be realized and applied as we imagine them theoretically. But the matter is always dealt with within the limits of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So fear Allah as much as you are able فاتقوا الله ما استطعتم
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
