The questioner : The hadith of seeking intercession, or the hadith of the blind man who came to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), is the same text that came in [the other narration].

The Shaykh : The hadith is authentic, yes. However, the narrator is...
Al-Halabi : ...the one who used to visit Uthman ibn 'Affan, for the sake of clarification.

The Shaykh : This is correct, yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. This hadith is authentic, meaning...

The Shaykh : The original hadith is authentic, but this addition—that Uthman ibn 'Affan applied the hadith after the death of the Messenger and advised that man to do this, as I told you—is weak in chain and denounceable in text.
As for the original story, a blind man came to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Pray to Allah to cure me." He said:
If you wish I will supplicate for you, and if you wish, you can be patient, for that is better for you. إن شئت دعوت وإن شئت صبرت فهو خير لك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3578Sahih (Darussalam)
He said, "So pray." Then he (peace be upon him) said:
Go to the place of ablution, perform ablution, and pray two units of prayer to Allah, not the obligatory prayer, then say: O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet, the Prophet of Mercy. O Muhammad, I turn to my Lord through You to cure me. O Allah, grant him intercession for me and grant me intercession through him.
The man did so; he prayed and made this supplication, and he returned with his sight restored. This is authentic. As for Uthman ibn Hanif, who narrated this hadith, he narrates an addition to the hadith that a man came to Uthman complaining of his situation, so he ordered him to seek intercession through this means, and that was after the death of the Messenger. This is denounceable.
