The questioner : My cousin’s son married my sister and they had a son and a daughter. This daughter has six fingers on her hand, and the sixth finger is small. Is it permissible to remove it through a surgical operation?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is permissible to remove a finger from the hand or foot through a surgical operation, provided that we are safe from danger to the person from whom we wish to remove the extra finger. The same applies if the excess is in something other than a finger; sometimes the excess is in the ear, where something extra grows out of it, and sometimes the excess is on the head, where something hangs down from it.
The important point is that whenever it is a defect that disfigures the natural form, there is no harm in performing an operation to remove it and beautify the area, provided that the harm and damage are safe.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
