Prayer Outside the Mosque

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praying on a Place Elevated Above the Ground

Question: Is it permissible to perform prayer on a place elevated above the ground, such as a bed or the like, if a person doubts the purity of the ground, and he has no excuse such as illness or the like?

Answer: There is no harm in a person praying on a place elevated above the ground, such as a bed or the like, if it is pure and stable, such that no shaking or instability occurs for the one praying, and no disturbance is caused to the one praying. As long as it is stable and pure, there is no harm in praying on it, if Allah wills.

Answer: Your prayer, as you described it, when you found the mosque crowded and did not find a place in it, so you prayed outside on the sidewalk next to the mosque, and you were hearing the imam, then the prayer in such a case is valid due to necessity, provided that you did not get ahead of the imam in your position. However, if there is a road between the one praying and the mosque, as you described in the end of your question, then following the imam is not valid in such a case, if there is a road between the mosque and the one praying in which people walk and cars pass during the prayer, then the prayer is not valid in this case. But if the rows connected through the road to your location, and the entire place became a place of prayer, then the prayer is valid in this case.
But if the road is one in which people walk and there are no connected rows, then the prayer in such a case is not valid, because of your disconnection from the imam and the separation between you and him by the passersby, and Allah knows best. And this is like what the jurists said, if there is a river between the one praying and the mosque, or a river in which ships pass, or the like of that.

Question: But you were kind enough to say: If the rows connect through this road, how do we reconcile this with the prohibition of praying on the open road?

Answer: This is for necessity. If the mosque has become full and the people prayed outside and the rows connected, then the prayer is valid, even if their place was originally a road, or a market in which people walk. For the sake of need and necessity in such a case, especially on Fridays and the days when people are crowded, there is no harm in that, if Allah wills, due to the need.

Question: If there is a nearby mosque, and it is possible to catch the congregational prayer or the Friday prayer in that mosque, are they obligated to pray in it and not pray on the road?

Answer: If they can catch the prayer in a nearby mosque, it is better for them to go to that mosque and avoid the difficulty and the disagreement.
