The Shaykh : With faith and seeking reward, Allah will forgive him what has passed of his sins. So what is the Night of Decree, and on which night does it occur? The answer: The Night of Decree is the night of honor, because "qadr" means honor. The Night of Decree is the night of decree, because what will happen in the year is decreed in it, as Allah the Exalted said: [Ad-Dukhan 44:4] This is the Night of Decree. And on which night is it? Pay attention, it is in the days of the ten, in the nights of the last ten, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed i'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) for one year of the first ten seeking the Night of Decree, then he performed i'tikaf for the middle ten seeking it, then it was told to him that it is in the last ten, so he performed i'tikaf for the last ten, as established in the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). So it is in what? In the last ten of Ramadan. And on which night? Yes, it is permissible that it be the night of the twenty-first, or the twenty-second, or the twenty-third, or the twenty-fourth, or the twenty-fifth, or the twenty-sixth, or the twenty-seventh, or the twenty-eighth, or the twenty-ninth, or the thirtieth. Every night can be the Night of Decree. But the odd nights are more emphasized than the even ones. So what are the odd ones? Twenty-one, twenty-three, twenty-five, twenty-seven, twenty-nine. Five nights are more emphasized than twenty-two, twenty-four, twenty-six, twenty-eight, and thirty. Is it on one night every year, or is it on the twenty-seventh night in one year and on a second night in another year? We say: It is permissible that it be on the night of the twenty-seventh, or the twenty-fifth, or the twenty-fourth, but the most hopeful of the odd nights of the ten is the night of the twenty-seventh. The evidence for this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was shown the Night of Decree by Allah the Exalted, then he went out to inform the people, but two men quarreled, meaning they disputed and made a commotion, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) forgot it. But he said: Then the sky rained on the night of the twenty-first. The Prophet's Mosque was not like today; it was on a shelter, meaning made of palm branches. So the sky rained, the roof collapsed, and the ground became what? Mud. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated in the morning of the night of the twenty-first in the water and mud. Anas said: From the morning of the twenty-first. So this became on which night? On the night of the twenty-first. But I said that the most hopeful is the night of the twenty-seventh.
