Allah the Exalted said: (And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and pay attention) [the verse]

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Allah the Exalted said:
So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy. وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
[Al-A'raf 7:204]
How does this apply to the state of people before the prayer on Friday and before the sermon, when they are reciting the Qur'an? Why does not each person listen to the recitation of the other? Guide us, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : The meaning of His saying, the Exalted:
So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy. وَإِذَا قُرئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
[Al-A'raf 7:204]
Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "This is in the prayer", meaning that the one praying behind the imam is commanded to listen to his imam's recitation.
Nevertheless, we say that if a group of people gather and choose a reciter to recite the Qur'an, they should listen to him. However, if each of them wants to recite for himself, it is not obligatory for him to listen to the recitation of the other. I do not know of anyone who holds this opinion or asks this question that the brother asked. When people gather, they choose a reciter to read for them, and they listen to him. If each of them recites for himself, there is no blame on them.
