Discussion of the last verses of Surat al-Baqarah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:
In the past night, our imam recited the end of Surat al-Baqarah and the end of Surat al-Nahl in the Maghrib prayer. We mentioned that the subject of the verses he recited is very important. We spoke about the end of Surat al-Baqarah as much as was facilitated, and we mentioned what Allah has bestowed upon His servants regarding commands and regarding prohibitions. What did Allah the Exalted mention regarding commands? Please proceed.
The student: It is His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:286].
The Shaykh : It is His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:286]. Is this one regarding prohibitions?
The student: It is His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:286].
The Shaykh : It is His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] May Allah bless you.
We mentioned that an important rule is derived from the first sentence regarding obligatory duties. What is it? Or what do you recall? Who knows? Please.
The student: ... .
The Shaykh : That obligatory duties are dropped from the one who is unable to perform them. If there is a substitute, he performs the substitute; and if there is no substitute, it is dropped. May Allah bless you. Good. From the obligatory duties that are dropped due to inability and have a substitute? Do we need an example? What do you recall? Good.
The student: The expiation for zihar.
The Shaykh : Yes, the expiation for zihar is obligatory.
The student: It involves freeing a slave.
The Shaykh : If he does not find one.
The student: Then fasting two consecutive months.
The Shaykh : If he is not able.
The student: Then feeding sixty poor people.
The Shaykh : Well done. May Allah bless you. Is it correct to give the example of ritual purity? Water is obligatory, but if he does not find it, then it is earth, tayammum. If he does not find that either, he prays even without wudu' or tayammum, because obligatory duties are dropped due to inability. And this is a rule that is not from the opinion of so-and-so or so-and-so, nor from the thought of so-and-so or so-and-so, but from the Lord of the Worlds, who said in His Book:[Adh-Dhariyat 51:56] This is His worship; Allah the Mighty and Majestic drops from His servants what they are unable to do.
As for prohibitions, what is the rule in them? What do you recall? Who? Please.
The student: ... .
The Shaykh : Yes, that the ignorant person and the one who forgets is exempt from sin and from any ransom or expiation that results from the act; it is dropped from him. Good.
