What is your opinion regarding one who fasts without eating the pre-dawn meal, knowing that he is continuing to fast for the month? Is it not permissible to fast unless the intention is verbalized on the morning of that day, especially if he sleeps and does not wake up at the time of the pre-dawn meal?

The questioner : Regarding fasting, he says: What is your opinion regarding one who fasts without eating the pre-dawn meal? Knowing that he is continuing to fast for the month, is it not permissible to fast unless the intention is verbalized on the morning of that day, especially if he sleeps and does not wake up at the time of the pre-dawn meal, and intends to fast, for example saying: "I intend to fast"? Please also inform us about this question?

The Shaykh : Eating the pre-dawn meal is a recommended practice (sunnah); if a person eats it, it is better, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Eat Suhur, for in Suhur there is a blessing. تسحروا فإن في السحور بركة
Sunan Ibn Majah 1692Sahih (Darussalam)
And if he does not eat it, there is no blame on him. Many people eat a large dinner at night, so when they get up in the last part of the night, they are not hungry for food, so they remain with their dinner.
What is prohibited is for a person to continue fasting between two days without eating anything in between, for this is of the continuous fasting (wasal) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited with strong prohibition, to the extent that he prohibited them in a certain year, and they continued, so he continued with them for a day, and a day, and a day, and he said:
If the crescent had delayed, I would have continued fasting (because of you) لو تأخر الهلال لزدتكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7299
as if he were rebuking them.
As for the issue of intention, if that is in Ramadan, the Muslim has intended to fast the entire month of Ramadan from the first day, and there is no need to renew the intention every night, except if his fasting is interrupted by travel or illness, and then he wants to resume fasting, in which case it is obligatory to have the intention to resume.
And if he is a resident, healthy, and continuous in his fasting, then the intention for Ramadan on the first day is sufficient for all of it. So based on this, if someone sleeps in Ramadan after the afternoon prayer and does not wake up until after the dawn of the next day, his fasting is valid.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
