The questioner : A Yemeni student in the Soviet Union says: Your Eminence, I am studying in a college and I do not find time to pray the midday prayer at its time, because I do not finish my studies until the time of the afternoon prayer, so I perform the ablution and pray the midday and afternoon prayers together. What is the ruling on this? Knowing that I will continue in this state for four years, which is the duration of the studies?
The Shaykh : It is established in Sahih Muslim from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father): So Ibn Abbas was asked about that, and he said: "He intended not to cause hardship for his Ummah" meaning: that he did not want to bring hardship upon his Ummah.
So if there is hardship for you in not combining, there is no harm in combining the midday and afternoon prayers, or the sunset and night prayers. And if there is no hardship for you, in that you are able to pray the midday prayer at its time and the afternoon prayer at its time, then it is better not to combine.
However, your being away for studies is considered travel by some of the scholars, which eases the matter somewhat.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
