The meaning of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "There is no one who is wounded in the cause of Allah, and Allah knows best who is truly wounded in His cause, except that he will come on the Day of Resurrection with the color of blood and the scent of musk"

The Shaykh : And listen to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever is wounded while fighting in the way of Allah
Riyad as-Salihin 1295

"Maklum" means a wounded person who is injured in the cause of Allah
and Allah knows best who is truly wounded in His cause, except that he will come on the Day of Resurrection with his wound oozing blood, the color of blood, and the scent of musk
.
The point of attention is his saying:
and Allah knows better about who has been injured in His cause
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1656Sahih (Darussalam)
Pay attention to this qualification. That is why al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his Sahih regarding this hadith: "It is not said, 'So-and-so is a martyr'". It is not said, "So-and-so is a martyr," even if he is killed in battle between the Muslims and the disbelievers. You do not say "martyr." What do you say? I say, "It is hoped that so-and-so is a martyr." As for saying "martyr" when the Messenger says:
and Allah knows better about who has been injured in His cause
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1656Sahih (Darussalam)
, this is not permissible. How can we say this when the Messenger disavows applying the title of martyr to one in such a state? He said:
and Allah knows better about who has been injured in His cause
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1656Sahih (Darussalam)
. Then consider the story that also came in Sahih al-Bukhari. There was a man with the Muslims; there was a man with the Muslims who was brave, strong, and bold, leaving no loose end for the enemy without dealing with it. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
This (man) is from the dwellers of the Hell-Fire.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4203
And the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not speak from desire. He said:
This (man) is from the dwellers of the Hell-Fire.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4203
This was a great burden on the Companions and it was hard for them. How could this brave, bold man be from the people of the Fire? So one of them, one of the Companions, said, "By Allah, I will stick to him," meaning he would follow him to see what the outcome would be. So this man was hit by an arrow from the enemy and he panicked. It was as if he was saying, "By Allah, I know how I can be hit by an arrow when I am that brave, bold man?" So he panicked, drew his sword, and leaned on it from his chest until it came out of his back. What was the result? He killed himself. May Allah protect us from that. So the man who had been sticking to him came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." He said, "Why? What is the reason?" This man said, "The man I was following is from the people of the Fire; he did such and such." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, the man إن الرجل
- Pay attention, O brother -
A man may do what may seem to the people as the deeds of the dwellers of Paradise, but he is of the dwellers of the Hell-Fire
Sahih al-Bukhari 4207
May Allah protect us and you from that. O Allah, rectify our hearts.
The difficult matter is that the hearts must be purified above all else. Then, if the heart is rectified and purified, what happens to the limbs? They follow it. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt
Sahih al-Bukhari 52
, which is the heart. O Allah, rectify our hearts. Good.
