The Meaning of Allah's Saying: "He has succeeded who purifies it," and a discussion on the purification of souls

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Listen:
He has succeeded who purifies it
That is, he purified himself by performing obedience to Allah, doing what is commanded and leaving what is forbidden.
He has succeeded who purifies it
That is, he purified himself, cleansing it from the filth of sins and shirk (associating partners with Allah) to the best of his ability. Indeed, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has not burdened us with what we cannot bear. Allah the Exalted said:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
. And Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
So fear Allah as much as you are able
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
. So we are commanded to purify our souls as much as we can. The purification of souls is in the right of Allah and in the right of human beings. Purification in the right of Allah is that you perform obedience to Allah and leave what Allah has forbidden with an open chest and a satisfied soul. Purification with regard to creation is that you treat them as you would like to be treated. This is the standard. How do you treat people? Stand up, no, you did well. May Allah bless you. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) denied the perfection of faith until a person loves for his brother what he loves for himself. And he (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said, listen, he said:
Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden
Sahih Muslim 1844a
. And we all love this. Is that not so?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : We all love this, and we ask Allah the Exalted to grant it to us.
Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allah and the Last Day
Sahih Muslim 1844a
. This is in the right of Allah.
and let him treat people as he would like to be treated
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4191Sahih (Darussalam)
. The discussion is on the last one:
and let him treat people as he would like to be treated
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4191Sahih (Darussalam)
. So now, if you find your brother in distress and difficulty, imagine yourself to be the one in distress and difficulty; imagine yourself in this state so that you try to remove the distress and difficulty from this brother. If you see that Allah has blessed your brother with a blessing, do you rejoice in it or are you sad? Your faith is not complete until you rejoice in it, because you love for Allah to bless you with a blessing. So love for your brother what you love for yourself. This is the opposite of the envious people—may Allah protect us from them—the opposite of the envious people who, when Allah blesses others with a blessing, hate it and wish it would disappear, and in fact try to remove it. You find, for example, a man speaking about a person to whom Allah the Exalted has given wealth. And this man spends the money in the ways of goodness. You find the envious people saying, "By Allah, so-and-so, what Allah willed, spends money in the way of goodness, but..." and he lies in the statement sometimes. He speaks with lies. What did this bring him? Since he is spending his money in the ways of goodness, praise him and do not come with "but." But this cuts the neck. But some people, may Allah protect us from them, envy the one to whom Allah the Exalted has given good. Yes. They envy the one to whom Allah the Exalted has given good, so when the good is mentioned, they come with a correction. The correction is with what? With "but." "But, by Allah, the man spends money generously and is good and does good, but he has some lies." Yes, and he answers by minimizing them. Yes. Or he says, "So-and-so, by Allah, is good and spends a lot in the ways of goodness, but he is a fool; he gets angry at every word." Well, what is that to us? But envy—may Allah protect us from it—do you accept that someone disparages you while you are doing good? Answer.
The student: No.

The Shaykh : No. So do not do it to your brother. So the purification of the soul is in what concerns the right of Allah and what concerns the right of the creation. Purify yourself with people, be the best of creation, love for them what you love for yourself, help them to do good, and warn them against doing evil. All of this is among the duties of a brother toward his brother. Yes.
