The questioner : Your Eminence, is the prohibition against asking in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تسألوا عن أشياء إن تبد لكم تسؤكم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:101]

The Shaykh : It is specific.
do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you. But if you ask about them while the Qur'an is being revealed, they will be shown to you. Allah has pardoned that which is past لا تسألوا عن أشياء إن تبد لكم تسؤكم وإن تسألوا عنها حين ينزل القرآن تبد لكم عفا الله عنها
[Al-Ma'idah 5:101]
. For this reason, it was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The most sinful person among the Muslims is the one who asked about something which had not been prohibited, but was prohibited because of his asking. إنّ أعظم المسلمين جرما من سأل عن شيء لم يحرم فحُرّم من أجل مسألته
Sahih al-Bukhari 7289
. As for after the death of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), it is obligatory for the servant, if something is unclear to him, to ask about it, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know. فاسألوا أهل الذكر إن كنتم لا تعلمون
[An-Nahl 16:43]
.

The questioner : Is it permissible to verbalize?

The Shaykh : What time is it?
The student: It is ten minutes to seven.

The Shaykh : Five minutes.

The questioner : Is it permissible to verbalize?

The Shaykh : This is a matter of haggling. I say five minutes because I know you will say ten minutes. Yes.
