The questioner :
Traveling is a kind of torture السفر قطعة من العذاب
Sahih al-Bukhari 5429
Is this a hadith? Does travel have categories? And what is the meaning of the hadith?

The Shaykh : Yes, travel is a piece of torment because the traveler suffers in his conscience and suffers in his body. You find him anxious, waiting for when he will reach the country he is heading to. You find him anxious, fearing accidents, especially in our time when these cars have become numerous, causing many serious accidents.
For this reason, the traveler does not find rest, even if he travels by plane. He does not find rest; his heart is in distress, fearing that the plane will crash, fearing that a disturbing malfunction will occur, even if it does not reach the point of crashing, and so on, of the things that those who travel know.

The questioner : And does it have categories?

The Shaykh : As for the categories of travel, yes, it has categories:
Forbidden travel, permissible travel, disliked travel, and obligatory travel.
So obligatory travel is: travel for Hajj, if the Hajj is obligatory, if the person is not from the people of Makkah.
And recommended travel is: if a person travels for an act of obedience, such as traveling to maintain family ties, or to be dutiful to his parents, or the like of that. And this may be from the category of obligatory travel.
And disliked travel is: the travel in which a person does not gain any benefit; rather, it is a waste of time and a waste of money.
And forbidden travel is: traveling for a forbidden purpose, such as traveling, may Allah protect us, to the lands of disbelief to satisfy his desire by committing unlawful sexual intercourse, or his lust by drinking intoxicants, or the like of that. So this is forbidden travel.
And the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, differed regarding forbidden travel: does it permit what non-forbidden travel permits? That is, is it permissible to shorten the prayer, to break the fast in Ramadan, to wipe over the leather socks for three days and nights, and the like of that?
I say: The scholars differed regarding forbidden travel: does it permit for him the dispensations of travel, or not? There are two opinions:
Some said that he does not permit for himself the dispensations of travel. Rather, we say to him: repent first, then take the dispensations of travel. And that is because disobedience is incompatible with dispensation.
And some of the scholars said: his sin is with this travel, and it does not affect his being a traveler. And the texts have come in general terms that the traveler has the right to take the dispensations of travel.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
