Explaining the Danger of the Jews and Christians to the Muslim Community

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Are the Jews and Christians enemies of the Muslims?
The student: Enemies.

The Shaykh : Enemies?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : What is the evidence?
The student:
And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you
[Al-Baqarah 2:120]

The Shaykh :
You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians."
[Al-Ma'idah 5:82]
So the Jews are enemies, the polytheists are enemies and they are the most hostile of people, and the Christians?
and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians."
[Al-Ma'idah 5:82]
They are the closest of the disbelievers in affection to us. Muslims read this verse and take the first part of it without the second part, just as a reader reads
O you who have believed, do not approach prayer
[An-Nisa 4:43]
and stops, and if he reads
Do not approach prayer
and stops, he says that Allah forbids approaching prayer. The other says: I will add to you that Allah said
Woe to the praying ones
and stops. So the first one read the verse containing the prohibition of approaching prayer, and the second read the verse containing the warning for those who pray, but the speech of Allah is connected, part to part. Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, do not approach prayer
[An-Nisa 4:43]
in a restrictive circumstantial clause,
while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying
[An-Nisa 4:43]
and the second verse,
Woe to the praying ones
who are they?
The student:
[But] who are heedless of their prayer -
[Al-Ma'un 107:5]
.

The Shaykh :
(5) [But] who are heedless of their prayer - (6) Those who make show [of their deeds] (7) And withhold [simple] assistance.
[Al-Ma'un 107:5-7]
The one who says "those who are the closest in affection to the believers are those who said, 'We are Christians'" and does not read the end of the verse errs in his argumentation. The perfection of argumentation is to examine the entire evidence. And so He said:
(82) You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant. (83) And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses. ذلك بأن منهم قسيسين ورهباناً وأنهم لا يستكبرون وإذا سمعوا ما أنزل إلى الرسول
[Al-Ma'idah 5:82-83]
Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses. (84) And why should we not believe in Allah and what has come to us of the truth? And we aspire that our Lord will admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people."
[Al-Ma'idah 5:83-84]
Is this description, which is the operative cause of the ruling, applicable to the Christians of our time and the previous times from long ago? The answer is no. We have not seen among them priests and monks who do not become arrogant. We have seen among them priests who call people to Christianity by all means they can, by broadcasting on the radio, sending out pamphlets, and sending tapes to mailboxes in the lands of Islam. It happened to one of the brothers here that a tape arrived in his mailbox, and when he listened to it, it was a tape calling for Christianity explicitly and clearly, as if they are tracking people. And workers come to us from them who know the locations or know the places here, and they spread their poison. So they are the opposite of what Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) mentioned regarding the Christians when the Qur'an was revealed. And so we hear these days that they have a fierce attack on the Muslims and on Islam. Those who are able to attack it militarily do so, and those who are not able to do so spread their poison through their media, which is not prevented by fortresses or surveillance, because the means of media have now spread greatly, both secretly and openly.
