A word from the Shaykh about envy.
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And envy is one of the characteristics of the Jews; they are the ones who envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty. And unfortunately, the envy that is a characteristic of the Jews is also found in this Ummah. How many are the envious toward their peers! How many are the envious among the students of knowledge toward other students! And the strange thing is that the students of knowledge unleash envy upon one another, but they do not unleash it upon the envy of one whom Allah has given wealth, so that he spends it in the pleasure of Allah. This is from the whispers of Shaytan, and may Allah protect us from that. The believing person is the one who is content with the decree and destiny of Allah and does not wish for what Allah has preferred some people over others with. However, he strives to reach a higher and more complete level. You are not to be blamed if you strive to be higher than others and better than others, but you are to be blamed if you hate what Allah has given others of bounty, whether it is bounty of knowledge, wealth, status, or otherwise. And you should be as Allah has commanded you: [An-Nisa 4:32] Complete the verse?
The student:.
The Shaykh : If you see that Allah has given another person more than you of knowledge, wealth, status, children, or otherwise, then say: "That is the bounty of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills." And ask Allah of His bounty, and do not envy him.
And ask Allah of His bounty.
واسألوا الله من فضلهAnd do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned
