Defining envy, its condemnation, and that it is a characteristic of the Jews

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So, in this passage, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that the one who has envy in his heart has a resemblance to the Jews. If he envies someone for what Allah has granted him of His bounty, whether it be knowledge, wealth, status, children, or anything else, he has a resemblance to the Jews, for they are the ones who envy people for what Allah has granted them of His bounty.
Envy is said to be wishing for the removal of Allah’s (Mighty and Majestic) blessing from another, or it is said to be disliking Allah’s blessing upon another. This second definition is the definition of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: “Whoever dislikes what Allah has bestowed upon another has envied him, whether he wishes for its removal or not.” What he (may Allah have mercy on him) said is more correct, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself. لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
How can you dislike for your brother that Allah bestows upon him a blessing of knowledge, wealth, status, children, or anything else, when you do not dislike that for yourself? This is envy. So you must avoid this. We have mentioned in previous gatherings the harms of envy and what follows from it, so there is no need to repeat it. Refer to the tapes, if Allah wills. Yes.
