The Shaykh : The third point is that we ask ourselves: when we pray in the Sacred Mosque amidst this congestion, tightness, and hardship, do we attain the same softness of heart and turning back to Allah as we do when we pray in our mosques in our countries? There is a calmness, a humility, and a connection of the heart to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) where a person feels that he is truly in prayer and connected to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). I say that this is not attained by many people. It may be attained by some, but not by most of them. What is the purpose of worship? The purpose of worship is the rectification of the hearts. The most important thing is the rectification of the heart, not the outward appearance. Listen to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [At-Tariq 86:8-9] Do not consider the outward appearances; consider the heart. Listen to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-'Adiyat 100:9-10] The speech is about the heart, about the turning back of the heart, about its return to Allah. As for the deeds, they are deeds that nourish the heart and rectify the heart. They are in the position of water in watering a tree. If we neglect the essence and are content with the outward appearances, then this is like one who cares for the husk and leaves the kernel. Did not the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say about the Khawarij that they recite the Qur'an and pray, and that a Companion considers his own prayer and recitation insignificant compared to theirs? And yet they emerge from Islam as an arrow emerges from its quiver. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered to fight them wherever they are encountered. Did this outward appearance benefit them? It did not benefit them. So, my brother, if you perform a righteous deed, whether it is dhikr, recitation, fasting, charity, or otherwise, look at what effect it has had on your heart. What effect has it had? Did it result in turning back to Allah, facing Him, and repenting to Him? Then rejoice in good; it has borne its fruit and you have eaten of it. Or was your heart as it was, a stone that does not soften, dry that does not moisten? Then know that these deeds have not benefited you.
