Prohibition of listening to songs and music, and clarification of what is excepted from this, such as the hand drum in celebrations and festivals.
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : A person may use his hearing to listen to what Allah has forbidden, such as listening to provocative songs and listening to music and musical instruments, except for what is excepted from them. Among the musical instruments that are excepted is the hand drum in celebrations and weddings. In celebrations, such as the days of festivals, and in weddings, such as the days of a man entering with his wife, this is what has been permitted as a dispensation. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has tested man with his sight; He gave him sight to test him, to see whether he looks at what Allah has made lawful for him or at what He has forbidden him. Looking at what Allah has forbidden includes a man directing his gaze at what Allah has prohibited, such as looking at a non-mahram woman, looking at indecent images, and the like. So Allah the Exalted has given man hearing and sight as a trial and a test.
