Mentioning the etiquettes of greeting and explaining its virtue, including various topics

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : But, unfortunately, many Muslims—and I do not mean only the common people, but even students of knowledge—have neglected this chapter. They have neglected this aspect to the extent that you may see two students of knowledge studying under the same Shaykh, reading the same book, who meet each other yet do not greet one another. Where is the brotherhood? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
By him in whose hand my soul is, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another: should I not guide you to something doing which you will love one another: spread out salutation among you. والله لا تدخلوا الجنة حتى تؤمنوا ولا تؤمنوا حتى تحابوا أفلا أخبركم بشيء إذا فعلتموه تحاببتم أفشوا السلام بينكم
Sunan Abi Dawud 5193Sahih (Al-Albani)
which means “spread” or “make public” the greeting among yourselves. Are we doing this? Have we done so? When a person says to his brother, “Peace be upon you,” he earns ten good deeds for it. If he says, “Peace be upon you,” he earns ten good deeds for that. Which is more valuable, ten good deeds or ten riyals? Which is more valuable? Ten good deeds are more valuable than ten riyals. The evidence is:
(16) But you prefer the worldly life, (17) While the Hereafter is better and more enduring. بل تؤثرون الحياة الدنيا والآخرة خير وأبقى
[Al-A'la 87:16-17]
But if I were to say, “O people, whoever greets his brother once, I will give him ten riyals,” would the greeting be spread among people? Yes, answer me, everyone. Yes, it would be spread. In fact, a person might even intentionally visit his brother just to greet him and receive ten riyals for every greeting, even though ten riyals are subject to being lost and will inevitably be lost, either by the owner or the money itself. Either the money is lost when a person buys food or drink with it, and that food or drink ends up being discarded in toilets and dirty places, or the owner dies before spending it. As for good deeds, they are cheap in the eyes of people. Therefore, the greeting is necessary when meeting someone. Say, “Peace be upon you.”
