The questioner : The honorable Shaykh saysThe questioner : The father of my wife insults the religion and Islam and insults Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and I have advised him repeatedly but to no avail, and he insults in both cases, when being advised and otherwise. Should I cut off ties with him and hate him for the sake of Allah, or what is my duty?
The Shaykh : It is obligatory for you, before cutting off ties with him, to establish proof of this, either by a recording or by hidden witnesses, and then to refer his case to the authorities so that they may execute him without giving him the chance to repent, according to the opinion of some scholars, or after he repents, according to the opinion of others. This is because insulting Allah (Mighty and Majestic) or insulting His Messenger is disbelief that expels one from the religion, by the consensus of the Muslims. Some scholars have said: His repentance is not accepted, meaning that even if we bring him and he says he committed this sin and that he has repented from it and that he has returned to Allah and that he praises Allah as He deserves, he is still executed. This is the well-known position of the Hanbali school, which is the basis of the judiciary in the Kingdom. As for one who insults Allah or His Messenger, if his repentance is not accepted, he is executed, and then it is between him and his Lord; if his repentance is sincere, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) accepts it, but we do not accept it; rather, we execute him in any case. Some scholars have said: The repentance of one who insults Allah is accepted if we know that his repentance is sincere, and this is the correct opinion. However, it is necessary that this man’s case be referred to the court, and this questioner must refer his case to the court. If he does not do so, he is sinful, because this is not a trivial matter: he insults the Lord (Mighty and Majestic), may Allah grant us safety. It is necessary that his case be referred if he does not accept advice. If he does not refer his case to the court, then it is obligatory to cut off ties with him, boycott him, and reject any gift from him, and not to do him any kindness, because, may Allah protect us, he is an apostate who has committed one of the greatest forms of apostasy, and his disbelief is more vile than that of the Jews and the Christians.
