The questioner : The questioner says: I am a pregnant woman who miscarried at the end of the third month, with only one day left before the fourth month. So I miscarried the fetus. What is the ruling on my prayer and fasting? I am currently in Makkah and have not performed 'Umrah. Is it permissible for me to perform 'Umrah, given that I miscarried a formed fetus? What is the ruling? May Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : The principle among the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) is that if a fetus—that is, a pregnancy—miscarries, it is either formed or unformed. If it is formed, the blood becomes post-natal bleeding. If it is unformed, the blood becomes irregular bleeding.
In the case of post-natal bleeding, it is obligatory for the woman to remain in that state, and she must not fast or pray. It is obligatory for her to make up the fasts.
Irregular bleeding does not prevent her from praying or fasting. Rather, she prays and fasts, and her fast is valid, and her prayer is also valid.
This woman, according to her question, says that the fetus miscarried while formed. Accordingly, the blood coming from her is post-natal bleeding. The blood coming out is post-natal bleeding, so it is not permissible for her to fast or pray, and she must make up the fasts afterward. Likewise, it is not permissible for her to complete her 'Umrah unless she had already performed the circumambulation and the miscarriage occurred after the circumambulation. In that case, she may perform the walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah, even if she is in a state of post-natal bleeding, because ritual purity from menstruation is not a condition for the walking.
