Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no capacity to bear, and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Master, so support us against the disbelieving people.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :
Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear ربنا ولا تحملنا ما لا طاقة لنا به
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
Then Allah said:
He has done so قد فعلت
. Therefore, a person is not burdened in matters of the Shari'ah with what he cannot bear, and this is from the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Then He the Exalted said:
And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us واعف عنا واغفر لنا وارحمنا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
Pardon is in contrast to negligence in obligatory duties, forgiveness is in contrast to committing forbidden acts, and mercy is in contrast to both. Indeed, if Allah the Exalted has mercy on a person, He removes from him the burden of leaving forbidden acts and performing what is commanded. Then He said:
You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." أنت مولانا فانصرنا على القوم الكافرين
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
And Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), when he recited this verse, would say “Ameen,” because it is a supplication, and one says “Ameen” to a supplication.
And Allah... and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and all his Companions. And as for the questions, which are numerous, he selects from them what is appropriate for the occasion and the discourse.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes...

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may the prayers and peace be upon our Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions, with abundant peace until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows, we ask Allah to make us among those who listen to the statement and then follow the best of it, and to make us among those who benefit from the knowledge that is taught.
