The questioner : My brother owns a gold necklace, but he does not wear it; rather, he only keeps it for some occasions, and sometimes he carries it in his pocket. Is his action valid?

The Shaykh : There is nothing wrong with owning a gold necklace, but on the condition that he does not wear it if he is a man. It is permissible for a woman to wear it. If a man does not wear a gold necklace, what benefit is there for your brother in carrying it or putting it in his pocket? I fear that he does so in order to show off with it before people, where he takes it out in front of them and plays with it in his hand, for example. Otherwise, I do not think a sane person would carry a gold necklace in his pocket without doing something with it.
In any case, if he does not wear it and does not take it out in a manner of pride and boasting, then there is nothing wrong with his carrying it. However, I suggest that he give this necklace to his wife if he is married, or to one of his female relatives, so that he is safe from the issue that has come to my mind regarding his carrying it without wearing it or taking it out in his hand in a manner of pride.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
