Discussion of Mikail and Israfil.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Among the angels, there are others whose names we have been taught, besides Jibril. Yes.
The student: Mikail and Israfil.

The Shaykh : Mikail and Israfil. Rest a moment. Mikail is the angel in charge of rainfall and vegetation. Rain and vegetation; everything with Allah is by measure. Everything is organized. Everything is in accordance with wisdom. He is in charge of rainfall and vegetation. The third is Israfil, who is in charge of blowing the Trumpet. Allah has entrusted him with blowing the Trumpet. The Trumpet is blown when the end of the creatures arrives. It is blown the first time, and the world is terrified, because it is a sound that cannot be comprehended. It is a tremendous sound that causes terror. Then they are struck down and die. Then it is blown again, and they rise up looking around. Glory to the One who is capable of all things. So these three—Jibril, Mikail, and Israfil—each is in charge of what gives life. Jibril is in charge of what? What gives life to the hearts: the revelation. Mikail is in charge of what gives life to the earth: rainfall and vegetation. Israfil is in charge of what gives life to the bodies on the Day of Resurrection. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would mention these in the opening of the night prayer. He would say when he stood up for tahajjud, opening with:
O God, the Lord of Gabriel, Michael and Israfil, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, who knowest the unseen and the seen, Thou decidest among Thy servants concerning their differences. Guide me on account of different opinions regarding the truth by Thy permission; verily Thou guidest whom Thou wilt to a straight path.
