The Meaning of His Saying: "And the Trumpet Will Be Blown; That Is the Day of the Promise"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :
And the Trumpet will be blown; that is the Day of the Promise
And the one who blows into this Trumpet, which is a great horn, its width being like the distance between the heavens and the earth, in which the souls are, is Israfil (peace be upon him), one of the bearers of the Throne. He is with Jibril and Mikail, and each of the three is in charge of what gives life. As for Jibril, he is in charge of what gives life to the hearts, which is the revelation. As for Mikail, he is in charge of what gives life to the earth and vegetation, which is the rain, i.e., the downpour.
As for Israfil, he is in charge of what gives life to the bodies at the Resurrection, which is the blowing of the Trumpet.
For this reason, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would combine these three angels in the opening supplication of the night prayer when he would say:
O God, the Lord of Gabriel, Michael and Israfil, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, who knowest the unseen and the seen, Thou decidest among Thy servants concerning their differences. Guide me on account of different opinions regarding the truth by Thy permission; verily Thou guidest whom Thou wilt to a straight path.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1212
, and so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would open the night prayer with this opening supplication.
And His saying:
the Horn is blown
[Al-An'am 6:73]
The blowing of the Trumpet is two blows. As for the first, it is the blow of panic and swooning, and as for the second, it is the blow of resurrection and emergence. Allah the Exalted said:
And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.
[Az-Zumar 39:68]
The souls emerge from this Trumpet to their bodies, and no soul misses its body; rather, it goes to it by the permission of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), until it settles in the body. Then the people rise from their graves to the Lord of the worlds.
And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) expressed the blowing of the Trumpet, which is a future event, with the past tense to confirm its occurrence. A future event, if its occurrence is certain, there is no harm in expressing it with the past tense, as Allah the Exalted said:
The command of Allah is coming, so be not impatient for it
[An-Nahl 16:1]
So do not ask for its hastening
.
This blowing of the Trumpet, by which the Resurrection occurs, and after this Resurrection will occur the great matters and the tremendous terrors
[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and all creatures will come out before Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
[Ibrahim 14:48]
The people will be gathered, all of them, males and females, young and old, on a single plain. The earth will be stretched out, after it was rounded in this worldly life; on the Day of Resurrection, it will be stretched and spread out, with no mountains, no valleys, no buildings, and no trees, but rather Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will leave it
(106) And He will leave the earth a level plain; (107) You will not see therein a depression or an elevation." قاعا صفصفا لا ترى فيها عوجا ولا أمتا
[Taha 20:106-107]
.
And the people will be gathered on this earth naked, not clothed, barefoot, not wearing shoes, uncircumcised, and without wealth, not possessing any property. The human being will have no money or goods with him; rather, it will be the righteous deeds—may Allah make me and you have a share in them by which we reach the Gardens of Delight.
This great day, which Allah the Exalted described with great descriptions in His Book, and His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) described it with them, the people will be divided into two groups: a group in Paradise, and a group in the Blazing Fire.
And in this Surah, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
And the Trumpet will be blown; that is the Day of the Promise
.
