The questioner : It was mentioned regarding the meaning of the hadith:
Whoever persists in asking for forgiveness, Allah will grant him relief from every worry, and a way out from every hardship, and will grant him provision from (sources) he could never imagine. من لزم الاستغفار جعل الله له من كل هم فرجاً، ومن كل ضيق مخرجاً، ورزقه من حيث لا يحتسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 3819Da'if (Darussalam)
What is the formula for that seeking of forgiveness, O honorable Shaykh?

The Shaykh : First, this hadith is weak, but its meaning is correct because Allah the Exalted said:
And [saying], "Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor وَأَنِ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ يُمَتِّعْكُمْ مَتَاعًا حَسَنًا إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى وَيُؤْتِ كُلَّ ذِي فَضْلٍ فَضْلَهُ
[Hud 11:3]
And the Exalted said regarding Hud:
And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals." وَيَا قَوْمِ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَى قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلا تَتَوَلَّوْا مُجْرِمِينَ
[Hud 11:52]
.
There is no doubt that seeking forgiveness is a cause for the erasure of sins, and when sins are erased, their effects that are attached to them are removed. At that point, a person attains provision and relief from every hardship and every worry. So the hadith is weak in its chain of narration, but correct in its meaning.
